Mixing techniques
When mixing drugs with fish food, rubber gloves should be worn to avoid the possibility of skin reactions and a respirator which at least complies with European Standard EN149, FFP2 to avoid inhalation of any dust particles.

SPECIAL NOTE:
Amoxycillin is a penicillin and these can cause allergic reactions in humans
Operators should avoid the possibility of skin contact or inhalation of this product. Suitable protective clothing, including gloves and a respirator should be worn. The respirator should comply with B.S. 2091 (Type A respirator) or B.S. 6106 (Type 1 respirator). Wash thoroughly after removal of protective clothing. Operator Safety:
Penicillins and cephalosporins may cause hypersensitivity (allergy) following injection, inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Hypersensitivity to penicillins may lead to cross-reactions to cephalosporins and vice versa. Allergic reactions to these substances may occasionally be serious.
1. Do not handle this product if you know you are sensitised, or if you have been advised not to work with such preparations.
2. Handle this product with great care to avoid exposure, taking all recommended precautions.
3. If you develop symptoms following exposure such as a skin rash, you should seek medical advice and show the doctor this warning. Swelling of the face, lips or eyes or difficulty with breathing are more serious symptoms and require urgent medical attention.

Sample calculations
Useful calculations for dosing
As a general rule fish will be medicated by mixing antibiotics with food. The fish will be given approximately 1% of their body weight per day as medicated food, then any additional food is given unmedicated.
Occasionally the food rate will be different, but for general purposes the 1% level is standard. Very sick fish may be off food and only eat a lower percentage feed, but if a low percentage is used too early it is possible that the healthier fish will take more of the treatment and reduce the efficacy in sicker fish.
Method of calculation
eg oxytetracycline @ 75mg/kg fish /day
50kg fish at a 1% feed rate require 500g food /day. ie 5kg food for 10 days
which requires 75 x 50 x 10 mg oxytetracycline = 37g oxytetracycline

MS222
POM-VPS Vm 11003/4013
This is the ONLY anaesthetic licensed for use in UK and should be used in all fish. Continued use of clove oil, phenoxyethanol and benzocaine is no longer permissible.
In trout the sedative dose is 10-30mg/litre
The withdrawal period is 70 degree days

Benzocaine & Phenoxytol
Benzocaine does not have a license in UK for use as a fish anaesthetic. It should not be used for this since there is a fully licensed alternative (MS222). This applies even more strenuously to food fish. It might be possible to make a case for its use in non food fish but for wild fish or farmed fish which may be eaten there is no legal alternative to MS222.
Sadly the same applies to phenoxethol and clove oil (eugenol), none are licensed for use in fish and even if used under the cascade or on a Schedule 6 exemption they could not be used on food fish.

Mechanism for veterinary prescribing
Basically the flow is:
Diagnosis
Decide on the appropriate drug – sensitivity, availability, etc
Eg. 100% oxolinic acid
Used under the prescribing Cascade
Use only permitted following application for an SIC
Dose rate 10mg/kg of fish/day for 10 days
For a 1% feed rate add 25g / 25kg bag to achieve 1g per kg of food
Current withdrawal period: 600 degree days
POM-V. MA 14443
Manufacturer – Vetrepharm A/S Denmark
Importer – Biotope, Winchester
FOR THIS YOU WILL NEED TO FILL IN AN SIC FOR THE SITE (download form from VMD) AND ORDER WHAT YOU CALCULATE YOU NEED AND ROUND IT OFF UPWARDS BY SAY 20g-ish TO ALLOW FOR MIXING
WHEN YOU HAVE THIS WE CAN SUPPLY THE FARMER ON YOUR PRESCRIPTION WHICH MUST GIVE THE NUMBER OF THE SIC AUTHORISING ITS USE
Before prescribing:
Two options
Mix at the mill – minimum 1 tonne of feed, up to a 2 wk wait
Home mix - Must have authorization for mixing on site from VMD Animal Medicines Inspectorate. They issue a site registration number. This is site specific, normally can only mix for that site and others under same ownership AND management. Discuss with them but other site may require separate registration.
YOU ISSUE – prescription to obtain drug, or supply it – SENT TO BIOTOPE
AND AUTHORISATION TO MIX IT
You have an obligation then to keep full records for traceability, as must the farmer who must keep the product in a locked store, plus full records for mixing
Operate at least a 600deg day withdrawal period (check with us for the current one for each product)
