Over the years the work done by Biotope has changed little. Our three main areas of work are fish farm consultancy, media support, and local authority inspections. Other areas such as corporate consultancy and expert reports re pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals are specialised and we invite you to call us and speak to Peter directly.
For fish farmers & public aquaria we pride ourselves in being able to offer almost anything, the simple listing is:

- Full diagnostics through experienced labs for diagnosis of diseases (parasitology, bacteriology, virology, histopathology)
- Organising and supply of necessary treatments such as antibiotics and emamectin (including necessary liaison with the EA)
- Biosecurity and Veterinary Health Plans (see the specific page for more info)
- Risk assessments
- Section 30 health checks for the Environment Agency
- Training for fish farm staff re basic diagnostics, sampling etc

We have considerable experience working with film and TV producers who want to use animals in productions, ensuring best practice for trainers and well planned, safe secure filming. We can offer a welfare/risk assessment prior to shoots and attendance through shooting.
Peter has worked in this industry since 1984 on the BBC series ‘One by One’ and since then on countless ads, minor animal appearances in film and TV. He has received credits for ‘Link’, ‘101 Dalmatians’, ‘102 Dalmatians’, ‘Fierce Creatures’ and ‘Fly Boys’. He was responsible for the veterinary care of the Harry Potter owls and has successfully worked for producers to bring animals into UK and work even whilst under rabies quarantine. All of these placed great demands on animals and Peter is proud to have worked on them with some of the best animal coordinators and trainers in the world.
Welfare and safety planning (for both animals and crew) are specialist areas and require industry knowledge. Working with dangerous wild animals such as lions and tigers also requires specialist equipment such as firearms and darting equipment to be available in the case of emergencies - this is all available through Biotope.

We are currently involved in carrying out inspections for local authorities, in particular (but not exclusively) regarding exotic species for local authorities.
Our MD led the major review of the Secretary of States Standards of Modern Zoo Practice carried out in 1999/2000 and which drive the Zoo Licensing Act (ZLA). He has carried out many inspections as both Secretary of States Nominated Inspector or as the inspector nominated by the Local Authority. His high level of credibility and professionalism has been extremely important in some more troubled inspections. Many local authorities choose to use a veterinary surgeon from the Secretary of States list as their inspector rather than their usual local riding schools/kennels veterinary inspector. This gives them continuity of experience between inspections.
Peter has also carried out many inspections for licensing under the Dangerous WIld Animals Act (DWA 1976).

We have worked with UK public aquaria for almost 30 years and have a unique level of experience in this field. Its links with aquaculture (our main area of interest) are obvious but one major difference is that fish in public aquaria give a veterinary surgeon the opportunity to practice individual animal medicine.
Peter Scotts formative seven years working in a high quality small animal practice whilst building a fish practice really come into their own, surgical techniques enhanced by on-the-fly techniques developed with wildlife are very valuable. This combined with the unrivaled expertise derived from work in aquaculture mean that we offer much in this sector.
• Veterinary visits and professional care
• Staff training using powerpoint
• Full laboratory support
• An open mind and willingness to work with you
• Access to all the usual veterinary equipment and drugs
• Experienced input to ethics committees
• Advice re Zoo Licensing requirements

There is always work which doesn't fit in a box and if you feel that our unique skillset may be useful to you then please email or telephone. We provide corporate support in some areas which are not indicated here and are involved in a variety of NGO's which involve animals.
Sadly one area which we have had to cut back on is pet exotic animal referral, the main work of the practice is now so spread that we feel that we cannot give this area the attention it deserves. We now find it difficult to follow the cases through as we would like, so are taking on no more referrals or new first opinion pet exotics. We work closely with a neighbouring practice which we hold in high regard and have a number of similar practices around the UK, we will always try to put you in touch with a veterinary surgeon who we feel can help and is within a reasonable traveling time.
We may not be able to take you on as a client but will always try to help.
